Movements, positions and conditions captured in the manner of churned up energy incite the actors to peak performances in all areas of expression. Theaterlabor has created an aesthetic language for Body Fragments which is based on the technique of alienation in the paintings of Francis Bacon, known for his distraught presentations of the human body and body parts. Obvious motives in his paintings like his critical attitude towards the institutional church and his preoccupation with homosexuality are interspersed with subtle irony. The premiere of Body Fragments was produced for the Venice Biennale in 2005.
“Impressively, with enormous effort and risking ugliness, the four actors translated the motifs of Francis Bacon into moving images. Distraught distorted bodies and faces, conflict and tenderness, silliness and irony combine in a language and movement collage to a complex picture of the artist.”
