Tshepang est le récit bouleversant d’un fait divers qui a ébranlé l’Afrique du Sud en 2001. Dans un petit village, six hommes furent accusés du viol brutal d’un enfant de neuf mois nommé Tshepang. Il s’avéra plus tard que ces hommes étaient innocents et que le véritable coupable était un proche. Mais la boîte de Pandore était ouverte. La médiatisation de ce crime eut pour effet de révéler des centaines d’histoires similaires. Avec 20 000 recensements de viols d’enfants par année, on commença alors à parler d’une véritable épidémie. Lara Foot Newton, auteure et metteure en scène, s’est rendue en 2002 dans ce petit village pour en apprendre plus sur le contexte social et psychologique qui peut mener à de tels événements. Visuellement inventive, Tshepang est le portrait d’une ville coupée de son propre coeur par la pauvreté, une pièce humaine et sensible qui se garde bien de tomber dans l’horreur graphique ou le jugement rapide.

Le fondateur et ancien directeur artistique du Théâtre Centaur, Maurice Podbrey, est retourné dans son pays natal, l’Afrique du Sud, en 1997 pour y établir Mopo Trust, une fondation qui soutient le développement des arts de la scène, incluant la production et la tournée d’importantes nouvelles œuvres présentées autant en Afrique du Sud qu’ailleurs dans le monde.

Tshepang was motivated by a true story that shook South Africa in 2001. The news of a brutal gang rape by six men of Tshepang, a nine-month-old child, devastated the country. It was discovered later that they had been wrongly accused and that a relative was guilty. But once the story hit the headlines, the scab was torn off a festering wound, and hundreds of similar stories followed. With statistics showing twenty thousand child rapes a year, South Africa is clearly facing an epidemic. In response, Lara Foot Newton, author and director, began researching the incident and the social and psychological landscape where events such as these occur. The result is a compelling play, a portrayal of a town cut off by poverty from its own heart.

Former artistic director and founder of Montreal’s Centaur Theatre Company, Maurice Podbrey returned to South Africa in 1997 where he established Mopo Trust to support the development of performing arts, including the production and touring of important new work both within South Africa and abroad. With Tshepang, he brings us a powerful and explosive play that has toured for the last three years in South Africa, Europe, Australia and New York.
