First we are faced with an ordinary situation: a manicure, an exchange of service, nothing more. Then, this reality cracks, deforms, twists: it anamorphoses and thus reveals the unexpected. Bodies, the universe, time are jostled, they belong to a whole different plane, the time of a representation. Behind the veil of illusions perhaps hides a reality that is both sublime and terrifying with endless possibilities. Martin Bélanger’s artistic approach is characterized by a far-reaching field of practice. As a dancer, actor, collaborator, consultant and choreographer, he takes part in projects ranging from experimental theatre to contemporary dance, interdisciplinary art and visual arts. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in dance from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1998. His creations have since been presented across Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan. In addition to his own creative work, he has collaborated with Jacob Wren, Benoît Lachambre, Carole Nadeau, kondition pluriel, Line Nault, Epsilon Lab and Oli Sorenson. In 2004, he founded Productions Laps (dissolved in 2017). Martin Bélanger’s portfolio also includes commissioned works, and he directs creative workshops for several institutions, companies and independent artists. He served a grant program officer for the Canada Council for the Arts from 2013 to 2016.
