Papillon stages three solos combining the aesthetics of street dance and contemporary dance on live experimental music. Exploring the fine lines between order and disorder, this show is based on the laws of unpredictability.

Choreographer Helen Simard has worked at Tiohtiá:ke Montreal since 2000. After working with a contemporary urban dance collective (Solid State Breakdance) for 12 years and participating in nine creations involving several people, in 2012 she turned her attention to her own projects. She has since invited musicians and dancers into the studio to create often deafening interdisciplinary shows, including On the Subject of Compassion (2011), Can You Hear Me? (2017) and Dance Side of the Moon (2018). She imports rock music codes into the theatre, transforming the performance hall into a space of liberty, one that is more convivial than conventional.

For six years, she carried out a multi-pronged research project on American punk rock icon Iggy Pop. The resulting Pop trilogy – NO FUN (2014), IDIOT (2017) and REQUIEM POP (2019) - blended her hallucinatory frenzy with the cathartic dances of this legendary performer. The shows have since been presented by Tangente Danse, La Chapelle, Agora de la danse, the Centaur Theatre and the OFFTA in Montreal, as well as by SummerWorks (Toronto), Dancing on the Edge (Vancouver) and Accès Danse (Chateauguay).

Helen is currently the artist in residence at the Playwrights's Workshop Montreal for the 2019-2021 season, through the centre’s Interdisciplinary Writers’ Workshop. She is taking the opportunity to write her first play, When Your Baby Dies. In 2019, she founded the company Créations Interdisciplinaires We All Fall Down with composer Roger White.

Helen Simard holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (contemporary dance) from Concordia University (2000) and a master’s degree in dance (UQAM, 2014).
