Corps mort features three performers and eight chairs suspended by a rope and pulley system. With this performance, Martin Messier continues his reflection on matter, gravity and movement. By controlling the performers’ actions and the movement of the chairs simultaneously, he rethinks the relationship between living and inert, loud and silent bodies. The chairs are not fastened to the ground to support the weight of bodies; nor are they immobile and silent anymore. They float, move and are heard in a moving scenography orchestrated and choreographed by Messier. They become, like the performers, full-fledged members of the cast.

Martin Messier specializes in directing performances based on sound. Exploring the relationship between sound and matter, inert or alive, he gives a voice to everyday items, invented machines and bodies in movement. In his performance installations, he aims to push the everyday imaginary a little further, to magnify these entities by giving them a voice and by reinventing their function. (La chambre des machines, Sewing Machine Orchestra, Projectors, Machine_Variation). At the core of his choreographic works, there is a desire to overturn the hierarchical relationships between music and dance so that music becomes the choreography’s driving force instead of being its mere accompanist (Hit and Fall, Derrière le rideau, Soak). His pieces have been presented in some twenty odd countries and have earned him many distinctions: mention at the Prix Ars Electronica in 2010, nomination at the Prix Opus in 2012, award for the best experimental short film at Lausanne Underground Film Festival in 2013 and the Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton award by the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2010, Messier founded 14 lieux, a sound production company for performing arts, and has been its artistic director ever since. Since then, the company has presented these projects in 64 cities in more than 25 countries.
