El Silencio de las Cosas Presentes

A performative dance piece based on the multi-sensorial sharing of the intimate, El Silencio de las cosas presentes is a reflection on haptic* sensations and pain. Marked by their personal stories and memories, the bodies of the three performers – Sophie Levasseur, Marie Mougeolle and Eduardo Ruiz Vergara – evolve to create a shift in perception and time. The exploration of physical boundaries of the body is built as a polyphonic chant, both disconcerting and familiar.

Set to the score of an immersive sonic landscape designed by Nathan Giroux and Gabriel Vignola, with Lee Anholt’s unsettling lighting, this choreo-haptic piece in the “Traces-Chorégraphes” series is a durational proposition on the edge of dance, performance and theatre. El Silencio eschews representational modes in favour of relational ones, placing perception and imagination in a constant dialogue around the succession of bodily states that form the strange palette of the piece.

* Haptics : from the Ancient Greek ἅπτομαι (haptomai) is the scientific study of touch, particularly in relation to sensation, proprioception, and kinesthetic perception.

Choreographer, performer and founder of the company Estantres Danza in Bogotá, Eduardo Ruiz Vergara has signed to more than twenty creative productions since 2001. Recipient of many grants and distinctions in Colombia, he settles in Montreal in 2012 and explores the notion of the poetic body in a PhD program in artistic studies and practices at UQAM. At the same time, he pursues his creative work, namely in partnership with the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) where he presents Yeux de Cérès in 2014 (co-created with the dramaturg Ilya Krouglikov) and massklo, matisklo in 2016, as part of the ECLECTIK multidisciplinary cabaret. Eduardo Ruiz Vergara’s pieces have been presented in Latin America, Europe and Canada.

El Silencio de la Cosas Presentes is a durational, episodic, choreo-haptic exploration for three performers seeking to trouble the notion of the “world of the senses” by foregrounding corporeal intelligence. The performance is inspired by the study of haptics as well as by a reflection on the body’s physical boundaries. With this research as a starting point, corporeal and symbolic interactions give rise to a melding of dance, theatre and performance art. The experience of El Silencio… is grounded in a multisensorial exchange, manifested through bodily distortion, perceptual displacement, and temporal shifts. Bodies meet and individuals inter/act in a series of variations that resonate with a succession of embodied states.
